Brand New Rich Good Interview

This morning on one of Rich Good's Instagram Stories I saw he posted a snippet of an interview that he did on a podcast. The podcast is called The Over/Under Podcast and it's by the Rattlesnake Cable Company, a company that sells cables for guitars. I watched the whole episode on YouTube and here's the link if you would like to watch it. The interview was uploaded yesterday.

Other Desert Cities

I'm happy to say that I finally have my own Other Desert Cities T-shirt, which arrived this week.

Other Desert Cities is a line of clothing that's from Very Very, a small business store in Twentynine Palms, California. The owners of the store are Rich Good himself and his girlfriend Dana.

I actually got two shirts for me: One to wear for work and the other for going out on my days off. I also got a postcard too (free!) which was really nice. I would love to buy more from Very Very again in the future.

If you would like to buy your own Other Desert Cities shirt (and/or other stuff too) here is the link to Very Very's online shop: https://www.thisisveryvery.com/

2/16/25 Update: I ordered from Very Very again and I got myself these cool badges. I really love the cat one.

15 Years

On this post I would like to congratulate Rich Good for being the guitarist of The Psychedelic Furs for 15 years.

In the mid 2000s when Rich used to be in The Pleased, the band was the opening act for The Psychedelic Furs and I think at the last show The Furs invited Rich to join them on doing a cover of the Roxy Music song "Virginia Plain".

Then in 2008 original guitarist John Ashton left The Psychedelic Furs and so later The Furs' manager called Rich Good. At first Rich thought The Furs wanted him to design a website or a poster but the manager asked Rich if he would like to be the new guitarist of The Psychedelic Furs; and has been since 2009.

Thank you so much Rich Good for your contribution, for your music, and for Made Of Rain. Congratulations!

Just now I discovered a new interview that Rich Good did on the website Palm Springs Life. Here is the link to the interview if you would like to read it. https://www.palmspringslife.com/the-psychedelic-furs-guitarist-rich-goods-double-life-in-the-desert/

I am still working on the second part of the fifth anniversary special of my blog. I know it's taking a while, but hopefully it will be finished very soon.

Rich Good Interview: Sactown Magazine

Photo: Matthew Reeves

Today on Instagram Rich Good posted a new interview that he did with Sactown Magazine. In the interview he talked about living in Nevada City, being a graphic designer, getting into music, when his band The Pleased toured with The Psychedelic Furs, and how he joined The Furs. Here is the link to the interview: https://www.sactownmag.com/love-his-way-rich-good-psychedelic-furs/

Oh, and one more thing: Only a week left until I see The Psychedelic Furs!

Self-Written Compositions

Most of the music on the songs by The Psychedelic Furs were composed by several of the band members but the songs that interest me are the ones where the music is written by only one member. I want to talk about the four who were the main composers on some of the songs: Tim Butler, John Ashton, Rich Good, and Paul Garisto.

The idea of this topic came to me recently and I was originally going to do four polls on the PFurs Facebook fan page that I'm on. I would do each one for Tim, John, Rich, and Paul, list the songs they wrote, and people would vote for their favorites. Then after that I would post the results on here, and I thought this would be a fun project to do. Two days ago I did the one for Tim, and after I posted the poll I waited for it to be approved and uploaded. But later that day I found out one of the administrators deleted the poll. I honestly don't know the reason why they did it, but since it didn't work out, I decided to just talk about the songs on here. Oh well, at least I tried...

Anyway, let's begin.

Tim Butler

Photo: Matthew Reeves

Tim Butler was the main composer of (as far as I know) seven songs. Four from Mirror Moves, a b-side, and two from Made Of Rain.

1. The Ghost In You
2. Here Come Cowboys
3. Heaven
4. Like A Stranger
5. Another Edge
6. You'll Be Mine
7. Tiny Hands

As a bonus I will list the Love Spit Love songs Tim composed. He wrote five songs and they were on the first Love Spit Love album.

1. Superman
2. Half A Life
3. Am I Wrong
4. Please
5. More

John Ashton

John Ashton was the main composer of four songs (again, as far as I know) and they are all from Mirror Moves.

1. Heartbeat
2. My Time
3. Only A Game
4. Highwire Days

Rich Good

Rich Good was the main composer of four songs from Made Of Rain.

1. The Boy That Invented Rock & Roll
2. This'll Never Be Like Love
3. Come All Ye Faithful
4. No-One

Paul Garisto

Paul Garisto was the main composer of three songs. Two from Made Of Rain, and one that was recorded during the Made Of Rain sessions but didn't make it on the album; although a year later it got released as a digital download. I wish Paul had written more songs because he's a very talented writer.

1. Ash Wednesday
2. Turn Your Back On Me
3. Evergreen

There are three other songs that I don't know who wrote the music for. The first is "Anodyne," a song that was featured on the live DVD Live From House Of Blues (2001); the second is "Cigarette," also from Live From House Of Blues, which was turned into a song called "Angelic" from John Ashton's band Satellite Paradiso years later. Because of this I feel John might have written the music for "Cigarette," though I could be wrong. And the third is "Little Miss World," a song that was debuted at one of The Psychedelic Furs' concerts back in 2012. I wonder if that song will appear on the upcoming album, and I'm curious to know if the music was written by either Tim Butler, Rich Good, or Paul Garisto, or if it's a band collaboration.

Speaking of the upcoming new album, I'm looking forward to find out what the songs will be and who composed them, and since Zachary Alford is in the band, I wonder if he will do some compositions. It will be very interesting and I can't wait.

Happy Birthday Rich Good

Photo: Reed Davis

Today I would like to wish a happy birthday to Rich Good, guitarist of The Psychedelic Furs. In the early 2000s Rich used to be in a band called The Pleased and in 2004 they opened for The Psychedelic Furs. Years later after when John Ashton left The Furs, Rich officially joined the band and has been their guitarist for 13 years.

In 2020 The Psychedelic Furs released their eighth album Made Of Rain and Rich wrote the music for the songs "The Boy That Invented Rock & Roll", "This'll Never Be Like Love", "Come All Ye Faithful", "No-One", and co-wrote "Don't Believe" along with Tim Butler and Paul Garisto. His guitar work on the album is absolutely amazing, especially on the songs "Ash Wednesday" and "No-One". "No-One" is my favorite Psychedelic Furs song of all time and Rich Good definitely deserves all the praise for writing the music on the song. The music is incredibly beautiful and fills you with emotion. And his work on the song "Evergreen" is fantastic too, creating an atmospheric beauty and nature that perfectly captures the lyrics of the song.

Rich Good is awesome as a guitarist and also as a human being. He has a heart of gold and is always kind to the fans whenever they meet him. Luckily I was one of them and I had the pleasure of meeting Rich twice in 2016 and 2017. I really wish I had the chance to meet Rich again when I last saw The Psychedelic Furs in 2019 but during the concert he actually recognized me, and I was so excited. He's one of the most nicest people I've ever met and I'll never forget his kindness to me.

Happy birthday Rich and hope you have a wonderful day!

Tim Butler's Lineup Ranking

I thought this was interesting but here's how Tim Butler ranked The Psychedelic Furs lineups from an interview with the Chicago Tribune back in 2014.

1. The current version*: "The best that has ever toured."

Left to right: Paul Garisto, Rich Good, Mars Williams, Richard Butler, Tim Butler, Amanda Kramer. Photo by Reed Davis.

2. The first version: "Usually we were not sober, to be honest."

Left to right: Duncan Kilburn, Vince Ely, Richard Butler, John Ashton, Roger Morris, Tim Butler. Photo by Tom Sheehan.

3. The version that toured in support of the band's smash Midnight To Midnight album: "Very polished."

Left to right: Mars Williams, John Ashton, Paul Garisto, Tim Butler, Richard Butler. Photo by Henry Diltz.

Marty Williamson: Backup guitarist for the Midnight tour.

Roger O'Donnell: Keyboardist for the Midnight tour.

4. The rest of the '80s versions: "Very keyboard-y, a very big sort of stadium sound." (This one is pretty much a tie)

*Nowadays the lineup is still mostly the same but this time Zachary Alford is on the drums. He's very good and I would love to see him play with the band live someday.

Another Rich Good Interview

Yesterday I looked to see if there were any new Psychedelic Furs interviews on the internet and I had found one that Rich Good did recently for the website Post-Punk.com. In the interview Rich talked about his former band The Pleased, how he joined The Furs, Made Of Rain, his favorite songs to play live, and a couple other topics. It's a really good interview and I hope there will be more interviews since the band are over in England touring. New Rich Good Interview

Photo: Matthew Reeves

Today on Rich Good's Instagram Story I discovered that he was interviewed by Pedal Of The Day, a website that's all about guitars, pedals, amps, etc., and this is a great interview because he mentioned Made Of Rain a few times. I would love to see more interviews with Rich, especially about Made Of Rain and its songs and I really want to hear more of his thoughts on them.

Rich Good Interview (2015)

Via @riichgood on Instagram.

While I was searching for interviews with The Psychedelic Furs to find any quotes to add to my Behind the Albums/Songs posts, I stumbled upon this interview with Rich Good. He was interviewed by Guild Guitars and it was published back in June 2015. Rich talked about the guitars he used, the concerts he went to, and also how he joined The Furs! A Video About Rich Good

Today someone left a comment on my previous blog post and she said there was a video on YouTube that has Rich Good in it. When I saw the comment I got excited and immediately went to YouTube. There's a music-related series called Board To Death and on the 28th episode it featured Rich Good. The episode was filmed on July 19, 2019 during The Psychedelic Furs' Summer tour and they were in Cleveland, Ohio. In the video Rich talked about his guitar and soundboard and it was really interesting. I had a smile on my face the whole time I watched it and while watching I thought of how I actually met Rich twice in person. It is just an awesome feeling.

Here is the video. Enjoy!
