In the October 25, 1984 issue of Smash Hits Morrissey of The Smiths was chosen to review the latest singles that came out at the time, and one of the singles was The Psychedelic Furs' "Heartbeat". Besides calling the picture sleeve "artless" and saying The Furs should stop being Americanized, he said that "Heartbeat" was a "good single".

The Psychedelic Furs: Heartbeat (CBS) "Good single with oddly artless sleeve. The Furs must de-Americanize themselves. A hit."
